Painter's Greyt Adventure!

Lucky Dog

I raced until I was 4.5 years old and then got rescued from Caliente Race Track in Tijuana, Mexico by GPA-LA/OC. I went to some guy's house in Garden Grove but his beagle didn't like me so then this lady decided she wanted me. I wasn't sure about her but I went. I had no choice. It was the right thing to do because we formed a bond so strong that I cannot imagine my life any other way. The lady's name was Karyn but I know her as "mommy" because every day of my life she told me, "Mommy loves Painter very much". I know she knows that I loved her back with all my heart and soul.

Mommy had a beautiful deep purple couch that called my name. She told me "NO!" and it hurt my feelings so instead of jumping on the couch, I wiped my face around the perimeter and it felt so good. Eventually the couch was mine but sometimes we shared. Then mommy told me that I could not get on her bed. Ha! That didn't last long and soon I was sharing the bed with her too.

Life of the Parti

I'm a big boy – long and tall and buff. In the human world, I would be a stud but for the record I'm a parti boy. Mommy always said that I was her Cary Grant because I am tall, black & white, handsome, and a ham. I would make Mommy laugh every day. Mommy can be loud but she's never mean. Mommy never hurt me (so why have I been afraid of the broom my whole life?) and she is so kind and loving. We had so many good times together and between her friends and my friends, we were a happy household.

You probably don't know this but Mommy isn't the only writer in the house. I have pawed a few stories myself that I think you'll enjoy:

--It's My Couch by Painter, March 2, 2000

What was she thinking? We only have one couch (mine) and a chair and I'm too big to get on the chair.

Karyn had some other humans over and they were looking at some logos (nothing to eat) and they were sitting on my couch. There was Andrea, Karyn, and this big tall blond guy who kept petting me. The petting was okay for awhile but I wanted back on my couch. Where did they think I was going to sit?

I noticed some space between Karyn and the guy and hopped up there. It was crowded. Everyone laughed but it wasn't funny. So I just spread out on top of them giving Karyn most of my body and putting my face in her lap like I always do but thumping my butt down in the guy's lap. For good measure I passed a silent gas bubble. I tried to pretend the tall guy did it but everyone started blaming me. Nobody laughed. I thought that part was really funny.

Lily is not allowed on the couch but she is up there when Karyn leaves. I don't tell as long as she leaves me plenty of room. There was no room for her on the couch with all of us up there so she just looked sad and walked off to lie on her bed.

The tall guy got up to open the door to let some air in and I hogged his space. Then they all laughed and got up to leave. Finally...

--Bang the Drum by Painter, August 10, 2000

Is your house as crazy as mine? My human had a party last night and of course we got lots of pets and scritches and some nice lady was feeding us crackers under the table but then an odd thing happened. Annette who massages my spine picked up the round tub of dog food and started beating on it with my Nylabone. Then Deni picked up the plastic thing where my bowl rests and started slapping it with the palms of her hands. Jim started beating on a box. Lily ran out back. Rachel was shaking a can of coffee beans. Fortunately my human didn't sing but she started to dance. I didn't know what to do so I started following my Nylabone. This went on too long and every now and then my human let out a scream and Lily howled and everyone laughed. I didn't think it was funny because I wanted my bone back.

Finally it stopped and everyone sat down for dessert. There's never a dull moment around here.

Be good. Guard the house. Love you.

--Happy 10th Birthday to Me by Painter, July 3, 2004

Hi hounds and humans,

On July 1, I became 10 years young. Today we had a breakfast birthday party and had so much fun. Other than me and Lily, the other hounds were Jimmy and Philo. And the humans were Karyn, Sharon, Lynda, Deb, and Christina. Not all of them have dogs but they all love me.

First we bobbed for hot dogs. Why work so hard? Philo and Lily bobbed their brains out. Philo's snout was all wet and Lily really dove to the bottom. She's such a food slut. Lynda fed Jimmy his hot dogs and when I saw that I knew Karyn would feed me mine too. Karyn wanted Christina to bob for hot dogs but she refused. That would've been a hoot.

Then the humans ate breakfast and we lay down patiently until the T.R.E.A.T. walk. Again Lily probably found the most treats but we all had some. It was like finding treasures. Then I opened my presents and we had peanut butter cupcakes that Karyn made especially for the party. Yummy! Then everyone left with a goody bag.

Karyn cleaned up and we all took naps. Partying is exhausting. Happy birthday to me! See you next year…

Love,

--My 6th Gotcha Day by Painter, November 29, 2004

Hey Pups,

Today's a special day. Mommy says it's the 6th anniversary or "gotcha day" of her picking me up at the foster home; I was 4.5 years old. I can't remember back that far although sometimes I still dream about racing and running. Life has been greyt here. I have friends – people and hounds, treats and food, toys, walks, a yard to run in and dig holes, and soft beds. I have my own bed in the guest room. It's a queen size bed and people who come to visit, share it with me. In the last month, I slept with Sandee and Rachel. (wink, wink). I'm such a stud boy. I have Lily to boss around and provide a public service as an alarm clock.

Yesterday I went to the vet for my yearly exam and a rabies shot and he couldn't believe that I am over 10 years old!

Don't forget to hug your humans.

Be good. Guard the house. Love you.

The Bacon Cheeseburger

Poor Mommy, my Karyn had to make a difficult decision but she made the right one. When a dog can no longer walk without great pain, it's time to let go. Before leaving planet earth, mommy slept with me on my dog bed for 2 nights. She didn't complain and she just petted and held me all night. Edie came to be with mommy so she wouldn't be alone and Edie brought me a bacon cheeseburger. I have never eaten a bacon cheeseburger because I cannot digest fatty foods. Edie fed it to me and I was so excited. Never in my life have I tasted anything that good; what a super last supper. Within five minutes I started to fart and my Karyn and Edie laughed.

Painter was assisted to the Rainbow Bridge by Dr. Brett and Melinda from Benarda Animal Hospital. They came to the home and he died peacefully in my arms. I would also like to thank Dr. Quick from Pantano Animal Hospital and Drs. Schillig and Stepita at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center for their assistance. He's always had better medical care than I.

Painter touched my life and many others deeply. He was a greyt ambassadog for greyhound adoption. If he touched your life or you want to help the ongoing plight of placing retired racing greyhounds into permanent loving homes, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Arizona Greyhound Rescue in his memory. I am on the Board of AGR as Communications Director (volunteer). So many hearts and hands go into getting these wonderful creatures adopted. Thank you for reading.
